Pencil is a wonderful medium to capture the urban environment. Most of us are familiar with drawing with pencil from our school days so it’s an unintimidating medium to work with and perfect for the novice sketcher.

The quick, soft lines of pencil are fast and fluid, allowing the sketcher to capture the hustle and bustle of the city. Hard pencils are beautiful for drawing the crisp lines of architecture, whilst the softer pencils and perfect for organic shapes such as people and trees. drawing

Pencil is also extremely flexible and very forgiving to work with for the beginner of sketcher lacking in confidence. If drawing with fine liner pens fills you with dread, then pencil is the perfect medium to get you started. By starting with pencil, the budding sketcher will feel confident in no time to tackle other media.

I always have some pencils in my sketching bag, so I thought a range of pencils would complement the urban pigment liners and work really well with the urban watercolour set and urban drawing book.

We set out to develop a range of pencils that contains the perfect selection of pencils for the urban sketcher. The set features softer pencils (6B — HB) for heavier line weights and shading along with harder pencils (6h — H) for delicate, light, precise linework.

There is no better way to capture a scene than sketching live on location and there is something very true about the result. It will never be a photographic representation but the spirit of the scene is evident and the very essence of the subject matter is captured in a way that photography never can.
