This famous Hotel in London’s Mayfair is one of the most iconic hotels in the world. It sits imperiously on Piccadilly, one of London’s busiest thoroughfares, wearing its architectural elegance lightly but effectively. I’d always wanted to draw the building, so I set out with a plan in mind. It’s hard to get far enough away from city buildings to sketch them in their entirety due to other buildings but I know that if I got a spot the other side of the wide street, that would give me a great angle. Key to this scene is the unfinished nature of the drawing which allows the viewer to complete the scene, the white space composition giving the building scale.

Black ink pen linework with colour marker, gouache and acrylic pen.

There is no better way to capture a scene than sketching live on location and there is something very true about the result. It will never be a photographic representation but the spirit of the scene is evident and the very essence of the subject matter is captured in a way that photography never can.
