Columbia Road flower market is a must see attraction when in London. During the week, the residential street is a quietly cool neighbourhood in East London but on a Sunday, the street becomes a riot of colour and noise. Flower stalls line the street and the crowds pack into the tiny market to buy flowers. The vibrancy of this scene makes for great sketching and I have drawn there many times. On a lazy Sunday morning, just after the lockdown in London, I was attracted to this eclectic store selling pots and homeware goods. Perching invisibly across the road, the scene began to unfold before me and, as people came and went, I just drew.

There is no better way to capture a scene than sketching live on location and there is something very true about the result. It will never be a photographic representation but the spirit of the scene is evident and the very essence of the subject matter is captured in a way that photography never can.
